I have grown up watching Matt Lauer and his various co-hosts on the Today show. I would wake up and get ready for school as my mother’s news played in the background, always hearing “. . .This is Today. With Matt Lauer and . . .” But today’s Today was rather different.
I, along with many others, learned that Matt Lauer was fired due to sexual harassment in the workplace and I am not even that surprised. It has become common place for things like this to happen, for women to get sexually harassed, for men to think they can. As these months, weeks, and days go on, more names get released and more stories told.
But these allegations aren’t just names and titles, they’re people with families, friends, children, and spouses. As Savannah Guthrie put it this morning, “How do you reconcile your love for someone with the revelation that they have behaved badly?”
“How do you reconcile your love for someone with the revelation that they have behaved badly?”
And that question is daunting in the fact, it’s our reality. People do these awful things, people we love, and make us question the relationships we have in our life.
There are no excuses for such behavior, and to the women and men who face sexual harassment/assault by people they most often trust: Thank you for your truth, because without we lose a piece of reality.
This is supposed to be the most modern society that the world has known, but today feels primitive.
. . . .
with hope for a better reality
